Would A Haka Violate the Ozark Conference Creed?

by Administrator on November 17, 2006

All Blacks Haka
Here is something to ponder on a Friday morning….

The haka has been discussed previously on this site (here and here). Since it is playoff time in Texas 5A high school football, the media is once again writing about the haka performed by the Euless Trinity Trojans.

The Trinity haka is clearly inspired by the spirited haka of the All Blacks rugby union team in New Zealand. One key difference is that the Trinity haka seems to be perfomed for their fans whereas the All Blacks haka is aimed at their opponent.

Would a Falcons haka violate the Ozark Conference Creed?

If yes, would it be different if we had a large Tongan population at Glendale?

My favorite haka is the new haka, complete with a throat slashing gesture, from the All Blacks. I know it would not be approved.

Food For Thought

by Administrator on November 12, 2006

“I won’t deny that it is pleasant to succeed in what you strive to do, but winning matches at all costs is not the test of true achievement.
There is no dishonor in defeat, as long as you play to the limit of your strength and skill. What matters above all things is that the game should be played in the right spirit, with the utmost resource of skill and courage, with fair play and no favor, with every man playing as a member of a team, and the result accepted without bitterness or conceit.”

Sir Matt Busby
Former coach of Manchester United from 1945-1971

Vianney: A Preview

by Administrator on November 10, 2006

Vianney Golden GriffinsSt. John Vianney High School is located in Kirkwood. The school mascot is the Golden Griffins and the school colors are gold and black. Details about the school are available via Wikipedia.

Vianney is a member of the Metro Catholic Conference which includes SLUH, CBC, DeSmet, and Chaminade. Vianney maintains a soccer website via eTeamz which includes their updated varsity stats and team roster.

Vianney reached the state championship game last year but lost to CBC, 1-2. Eight starters graduated from that second place team, but they had 11 juniors (now seniors) who saw significant playing time.

Vianney’s leading scorer is senior forward #17 Joe Madden. Vianney’s scoring appears to be well-distributed. They have six players with 5 or more goals on the season, but only Madden has reached double digits.

Vianney is being coached by assistant coach Brian Haddock. Head coach Dave Gauvain was suspended for the season for involvement with the Kutis U14 select team (his son’s team) for which he is an administrator. This is a source of extra motivation for Vianney in the postseason.
